Leshia Barcus, Mercy Comfort Health Center for Women
Leisha Barcus has been an active member of the Greater Des Moines community for over 25 years and her project management and advocacy skills have improved many of our local businesses and cultural institutions.
As Executive Director of Hoyt Sherman Place, Leisha led the $5M renovation of both its 1200-seat historic theater and art gallery. She served the Science Center of Iowa (Center) by helping to secure $15M in Vision Iowa grant funding to support the Center’s relocation and expansion to downtown Des Moines, and later served as its Vice President of Community Engagement, overseeing the marketing and fundraising operations of the organization. Leisha was the first executive director of Bravo Greater Des Moines, helping to secure and solidify local hotel/motel funding for our community’s major cultural institutions, and as Director of Strategic Initiatives she implemented a number of innovative projects for the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines under the leadership of Johnny Danos.
In addition to her non-profit experience, Leisha worked as Kum & Go Corporation’s first official Project Manager.
She is currently employed as Director of Mercy’s Comfort Health Center for Women. Leisha was tapped in late 2015 to lead this game-changing initiative, launching central Iowa’s only destination health care center designed specifically for the unique health care needs of midlife women. The Center successfully open in April 2017.
She is a graduate of both the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute (GDMLI) and the GDMLI Transformational Leadership program and has been recognized for her contributions with the GDMLI 2009 Distinguished Civic Leadership Award and the 2010 Des Moines Neighbors’ Alice Rodine-Robert W. Mickle Recognition Award. She is currently enrolled in IHA’s Hospital Executive Academy.
Leisha is past president of the Nexus Executive Women’s Alliance, and helped lead that organization’s Nexus Index Action Planning effort resulting in the launch of the EPIC Challenge, now marketed and managed by the Iowa Women Lead Change (IWLC) organization. She is currently chair of the American Heart Association’s 2018 Go Red for Women campaign.
